General look
With a strong constitution, firm and very active; large skull, wide and deep chest; large and well circled ribs; large and well-built kidney and back.
Peculiarity
Excellent temper, very supple. Great olfaction, smooth mouth; water lover. Adaptable and attached fellow.
Temper
Clever, alert and condescending, eager to please. With a complaisant nature, never aggressive or shy.
Head and Skull
Large skull with prominent well modelled stop, without ample cheeks. Medium length jaws, powerful but not pointed. Large nose with well developed nostrils.
Eyes
Medium size eyes that express cleverness and good character, brown or light-hazel in colour.
Ears
Not big and not heavy; adherent to the head and attached quite backwards.
Mouth
Strong jaws and teeth with a perfect, regular and complete scissors closing, such as the inner part of the upper incisors adheres to the outer part of the lower ones; the teeth have to be perpendicular to the jaws.
Neck
Neat, strong, vigorous, placed between the well built shoulders.
Front
Long and oblique shoulders. Limbs with good bones and straight from the elbow to the ground, both watching them facing and sideways.
Trunk
Quite wide and deep chest with large ribs towards the trunk's back part and circled. Large, short and solid kidney.
Back
Well developed, without sinking in the tail area; knee well bent. Low hocks. The bovine fetlocks must be decidedly penalised.
Feet
Round, firm with well curved fingers and thick plantar pads.
Tail
It is a distinguishing peculiarity of the breed: very big at the bottom become thinner towards the top; medium length , without bangs but intensely covered with short, thick and dense hair that give it the round look called " "otter tail". It could be cheerfully worn but it should not roll up on the back.
Gait
Free gait, to cover well the ground, with limbs perfectly straight and parallel both in the front and in the back.
Hair
It is a distinguishing peculiarity of the breed: short, dense without undulation or bangs, quite hard by touch; under-hair water proof.
Colour
Totally black, yellow or liver/chocolate. Yellow can vary from light creme to deep red. A small white spot on the breast is admitted.
Size
Ideal high at the withers: Males 56-57 cm (22-22 ½ in.) Female 54-56 cm (21 ½ in)
Defects
All that moves away from the points shown above should be considered a defect, which account is directly proportional to its weightiness.
